SPINAL MANIPULATION AND MOBILISATION

The spine is a complicated structure of vertebrae, discs, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves. Spinal manipulation and mobilisation is an important form of therapy, especially if you are living with pain.

Spinal manipulation

What is spinal manipulation?
Spinal manipulation, also known as spinal manipulative therapy or manual therapy, involves a combination of moving and jolting joints, massages, exercise and physical therapy. This technique is designed to offer immediate pain relief and improve mobility for certain areas of the body, including the neck, low back, ribs, mid-back and shoulders.

During spinal manipulation, the physiotherapist applies specifically directed manual thrust to a joint at or near the passive or physiological range of motion. This is a small, quick movement of the spine, accompanied by a popping sound created by a gas bubble.

Spinal manipulation is indicated to relieve pain by increasing the range of motion and taking the pressure off sensitive nerves or tissue. The process restores blood flow and reduces muscle tension. It also helps promote the release of endorphins, a chemical produced by the body, in order to relieve stress and pain.

Spinal mobilisation

What is spinal mobilisation?
Spinal mobilisation is a technique used to improve or restore joint function. During the process, the physiotherapists applies gentle passive movement to a spinal region or area to increase range of motion in that specific area and reduce pain. Spinal mobilisation decreases joint stiffness and repositions joints that may have slightly moved.

Spinal mobilisation is normally indicated to reduce the pain that is associated with cervical, thoracic or lumbar dysfunction. Patients with sensitive nervous systems and lower back pain may benefit extensively from spinal mobilisation.
