SPINAL TRACTION
What is spinal traction?
Spinal traction is a type of decompression therapy which involves creating forces to stretch and mobilise the spine which helps relieve pressure on the spine. This procedure can be performed mechanically or manually. Stretching tight the spinal muscles that are a result of spasm and wide intervertebral foramen helps relieve nerve root impingement and may alleviate back pain.
Spinal traction is normally indicated to treat a variety of conditions such as sciatica, herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, and pinched nerves. It helps straightens the spine, relieves pressure off compressed discs and improves the body’s ability to heal itself.
What are the benefits of spinal traction?
Spinal traction provides a number of benefits, including:
- Pain relief: The force that is applied helps straighten your spine, relieving pressure which may cause pain. This then creates a better physical environment for the healing process.
- Treatment for several conditions: Spinal traction is used to treat several medical conditions, including spinal stenosis, spinal arthritis, and herniated discs.
What are the benefits of spinal traction?
Spinal traction provides a number of benefits, including:
- Can be performed with other treatments: Spinal traction therapy may be used in combination with other treatments for a more personalized and holistic health plan. These treatments may include electric stimulation, cold or hot therapy, and ultrasound application which may be done during or after the spinal traction session.
- Promotes overall healing: When pressure is applied properly to the spinal discs, it releases healing nutrients which then speeds up the body’s natural healing process. It also increases the effectiveness of other treatments, which leads to faster overall recovery.
What does spinal traction entail?
Depending on your needs, spinal traction therapy may be administered manually or mechanically.
- Manual spinal traction: This involves Phillo Beukes using his hands to put manual force on the joints and muscles of the spine in order to widen the spaces between the vertebrae.
- Mechanical spinal traction: This involves you lying on the table that has special tools which will then stretch the spine. A series of ropes, slings and pulleys will be attached to your body which will mechanically relieve pressure on your spine.
